Every once in a lifetime you get the rare opportunity to be in the presence of true greatness of mind, and an icon falls from the sky to clarifies life and it's workings in a single hour of the day...
As Seb and went down the elivator to go to school yesterday morning, I saw a piece of paper sticking out of his backpack so I pulled it out to see if it was something important or just junk. On the paper was a note about some home work and just the word, 'Dalai Lama' sribbled below.
I asked Sebbi why he had 'Dalia Lama' written on his paper and he told me that was the field trip he supposed to go on that morning. The one he hadn't wanted to go to and I hadn't even recieved any paperwork on, and the one that was gonna have him in the grade 3 class for the day.
"What?" I said absolutely shocked that THIS was what he so glad to missing out on. "Your class is going to see the Dalai Lama today and you think you're gonna miss that? Sebbi- This is HUGE! Do You KNOW who the Dalai Lama IS?"
He of course had no idea, so the entire 7 minutes to school I excplained to him that the Dalai Lama is the head of the budist religon, he was in exzile from his own country, the government was still trying to kill him even now, this was life time experience, it was even bigger than meeting the Queen of England, and he was NOT gonna miss THIS for the world!!!
We went to school and I asked them about the paperwork and cost, so that I could sign what I needed to and come back with any money that was nessisary, to make sure Seb did not miss this chance of a lifetime. While I was there I asked if they happened to know if there was still tickets available for the Lama's? They said they didn't know but they may have some tickets left over through the school, and they would call me if they had any left later that morning.
The call came in only a half hour later and I was going to see the Dalai Lama too!!!!
I was SO excited!!!
It took me about 45 minutes to find parking down town at the Rogers Center, it was insane. I ended up missing the first 15 minutes of the presentation, which had Tibetan dancers and a whole host of Tibetan cultural stuff. But I was in the arena and rounding the corner when I heard the Lama say, he was "happy to be back in Canada again..."
I scurried over to my section, up the stairs and to my seat. I was there. I could see him- the Dalai Lama we right there and he had just begun to speak about humanity, peace and love.
After the shooting, the fire, and so many other things going on in my personal life right now, I knew that this was going to be something that would both inspire and ground me, and my present mind of thought.
He said so much and it was all so simple. Everything he said was absolutely true, and I identified with it all.
He stated that love and compassion are the most important part of life; that with out these things we are all destined to be hollow and empty inside.
No matter how much money and power a person has, yes money was is an important part of life (without it we starve and can not live) but those who are in excess of it are usually not the heppiest of men, therefore: it is ones own love and inner peace that holds most value in life, to your inner self and spirit.
He backed all of his teachings with examples, and while he didn't use names, he used instances wherein he had met with some of the most powerful, influential and wealthy people in the world, and most of them were the unhappiest people he had ever met. But when they talked to him and really listened, many of them changed their lives/perspectives, and found a sense of happiness/contentment in temselves over time.
Another of his teachings was that way to love, compassion and understanding was through 'Dialog' Many of the troubles of the world and our own personal lives could be settled if we (as a people) would just sit down and talk.; though not 'just talk' but also LISTEN to eachothers needs and concerns, and through listening come to some kind of compromise with compassion and undertsanding as the basis for this.
It's so true and it's SO SIMPLE when you think about it too.
His major statement was that although people say they want peace, pray for peace and protest for peace- much of this is just empty words. "Peace will not fall from the sky" it is something that needs to be brought about by actions. These actions are essentially dialog and compassion.
